Freelance Writers Know How to Communicate

Being able to effectively communicate is crucial, especially in the freelance writing industry. To put it bluntly, if you can’t express yourself clearly and effectively, you probably won’t have many clients and your freelance writing career will likely end quickly. Make your argument quickly and move on. Every day, people are inundated with texts, calls, and emails. You should get to the point as quickly as possible.

Buying an email list can help your company grow. If you choose to do this, be sure to identify yourself to the intended recipients. In one instance, I was invited to join Sales Spider by email. Neither the identity of this person nor the nature of Sales Spider are known to me. Why should I sign up for something I don’t understand? In my response, I inquired as to the sender’s identity, the means by which they obtained my address, and the nature of Sales Spider. A well-executed email campaign addresses the who, what, where, when, why, and how of the intended target audience.

The recipient of your email should know who you are and what you want from them. Not “I’d like to communicate with you” or something similar. One such response is, “Communicate about what?” The climate? Warming of the globe? Surely not the White House! Avoid vague language and focus on specifics. Tell them you’re interested in discussing freelance writing opportunities. Get in touch with them and let them know you’d like to talk about working together on a project. Never waste your time; it’s priceless.

If you’re a freelance writer, losing clients is as easy as failing to introduce yourself. Today, people get inundated with email. Usually, it gets sorted into Spam, but occasionally, an email will make it through to the Inbox. You need to introduce yourself and emphasise your authenticity to your audience. Most people will just ignore messages from strangers due to the high risk of falling victim to a scam. Write something like, “I spoke with so-and-so and they told me to contact you because you’re searching for a freelance writer.” if someone gives you another person’s email address. The person you emailed will know immediately that you are a “genuine” person with a mutual contact.

Writers in the freelancing industry know the importance of good communication. Join a group like Toastmasters to hone your public speaking abilities and attend seminars if you feel your communication skills are lacking. A career as a freelance writer might as well be a pipe dream if you can’t communicate effectively. Always put your words into action. Customers come to you because they need assistance spreading their message. What good will it do you to aid customers if you can’t get your point across? Please keep that in mind the next time you pick up the phone or type up an email. Have fun!
